Upon graduation from Covington High School in 1944, he entered the Navy, serving during WWII as a submariner in the Atlantic Theater. After discharge in the summer of 1946, he entered North Georgia College where he met the love of his life, Eloise "Weesie" Cogburn, and made many lifetime friends. Returning to Covington, he taught at Sharp Middle School, alongside Eloise, until she retired in the late 1980s. During their 62 years of marriage, they were avid social and accomplished contract bridge players. They also loved to dance, as they did for many years as members of the Covington Elks Club. After the passing of Eloise, Harry became a frequent golfer, playing with friends and family, especially Nancy, his daughter. He also enjoyed traveling both nationally and internationally with family. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Covington.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Harvill; son and daughter-in-law, Quigg and Laurie Davis; grandchildren, Drew and Nate Harvill, Zack and Zeb Davis; great-granddaughter, Shelby Harvill; and sister, Quigg Piper.
