Mary Ruth Laverty, age 75, of Covington, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020. Fondly known to friends and family as "Nanny Ruth", Mrs. Laverty was a longtime and supportive member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities. She worked closely with the mission ministry, shared her vocal talents singing in the choir, and cooked meals for countless church events. Mrs. Laverty used her caretaking nature to successfully start an in-home daycare and looked after the well-being of numerous children in Newton County. She was a fan of many genres of music, but it was country and gospel she connected with most. Mrs. Laverty had many things in her life that sparked joy. Among her favorites were Christmas, trips to the beach, puzzles, playing games of all kinds, shopping, and watching the Braves on TV - never missing a game! She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Laverty; mother, Maude Foskey; father, James Taylor; as well as three sisters.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Laverty will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2020, 12:00 Noon, at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, 3 Cotton Street, in Porterdale, with Pastor Roger Cato and Brad Nelson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with her family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Tuesday, March 17, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
