Jack N. Kitchens of Covington, passed away February 10, 2014, at the age of 77. Mr. Kitchens, a retired U.S. Army veteran, proudly served his country during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his 24 years in service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three times), the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and many others. He was a 1954 graduate of Newton High, and faithful member of Pine Grove Presbyterian Church. Mr. Kitchens was an avid golfer, enjoyed ceramics and reading. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Dorothy Annie (Cook) Kitchens; sister, Sally Russell; and his brothers, William and Donald Kitchens.
Survivors include his loving wife, Janet (Curtis) Kitchens; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Anne Kitchens of Atlanta, Kathleen Kitchens and Wayne Tindal of Augusta, Wendy Shepard of Houston, TX; sons and daughters-in-law, Robin and Janeth Abbott, Andrew and Teisa Abbott, all of Houston, TX, Damon and Amy Abbott of Covington; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Harriett Kitchens of Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Kitchens will be held Sunday, February 16, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Rev. George Dameron and Rev. William Herndon officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, February 15, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
