Mary J. Newsome, a lifelong resident of Newton County, passed away January 9, 2018, at the age of 87. Mrs. Newsome worked as an operator for Southern Bell, in Covington, for 25 years, and was a faithful member of Starrsville United Methodist Church. She loved flower gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and adored her. Mrs. Newsome was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Hugh Newsome; mother, Elizabeth Kitchens; sister, Jimmie Shields; and her brother, Bobby Savage.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Kevin Howell of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Bob Newsome of Magnet, Phillip and Sherry Newsome of Covington; grandchildren, Kimberly and Jon Wilber, Kraig and Nichole Howell, Kaine Howell, Josh Newsome, Matt Newsome; great-granddaughters, Katelin, Katheryn and Kora; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service for Mrs. Newsome will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018, 11 AM, at Covington City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in memory of Mrs. Newsome, to the Alzheimer's Association – GA Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346.
