OBITUARY
After a hard-fought battle with the dreaded Alzheimer's disease, Ethel Gwinette (Yates) Thomas departed this life at 11:27 A.M., Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Gwin was born January 25, 1941, in Columbus, GA, the second child of Willard and Bernice Yates. Her family later moved to Roopville, GA, where she and her older brother, Jimmy, grew up and attended high school while always being faithful to the family's church and the many Christian activities. She graduated from West Georgia College and taught public school in Fulton and Newton Counties, and later filled the position as Librarian in Henry County. Gwin and Hoke Thomas were married on November 20, 1965, in Franklin County, GA. Her hobbies were singing in the church choir, gardening, baking and being a volunteer and caregiver for the less fortunate. Gwin's steadfast Christian faith in God, and her kind demeanor, set an example for us all to follow. She was a member of Newton Baptist Church in Covington, GA. Gwin will be missed by her many friends and family members. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, all of Carrollton, GA.
Gwin is survived by her devoted husband, Hoke Thomas; sons and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Leslie Thomas, Joel Thomas, all of Henry County, GA; grandchildren, Austin Thomas, Carly Thomas, Hunter Thomas, Sierra Thomas; as well as the extended Yates family of Carrollton, GA, and the extended Thomas family of Charlotte, N.C., Greene County, GA, and Newton County, GA.
A Funeral Service for Gwin will be held Friday, February 15, 2019, 2:00 P.M., at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Road, in Covington, with Pastor Tony Howeth officiating. Friends may visit with Gwin's family at the church, two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 P.M.
