On January 17, 2020, John Reginald Towns, of Covington, entered into rest while surrounded by his loving family. Reggie was born December 15, 1943, in Porterdale, GA, to Tillman and Lillian Towns, the 4th of 6 children.
Left to remember Reggie with love and adoration is his wife of 17 years, Rachel Towns; son, Brad Towns; daughter and spouse, April and Jason Higgins; step-daughters and spouses, Lynn and Ken Malcom, Jennifer and Mike Poole, Amanda and Ryan Norton, Valerie Cook; grandchildren, Connelly Crowe, Max Higgins, Isabel Higgins, Hannah Mitchell, Mattie Durden, Rebekah Stowe, Bailey Gealy, Caroline Malcom, Jaysee Fallin, Jenna Hicks, Magan Poole, Michael Poole, Mason Poole, Abby Norton, Will Norton, Noah Cook, Anslie Cook, Sadie Claire Cook, Gralynn Cook; sisters and brother-in-law, Connie Criswell, Cornelia and Dexter Farmer; brothers and sisters-in-law, Phillip and Mary Towns, Travis and Linda Towns, Ruth Towns; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tillman and Lillian Towns; brother, Aaron Towns; brother-in-law, Lon Criswell; and granddaughter, Mary Beth Malcom.
A lover of cooking, you could often find Reggie in the kitchen whipping up his latest batch of brunswick stew. And, at Christmastime, he was charged with making the all-important and sacred egg nog for the annual family gathering. When asked to share his recipes, Reggie dismissed the requests with the claim he couldn't recreate his dishes because he didn't like to measure out the ingredients. But those who knew him best know he wanted people to come back for more, and secretly loved being the expert chef in the family.
He grew up and worked on the family farm until it ceased operations in the early 1980s. When he left farming, Reggie started working for Standridge Color Corporation, where he was employed for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he spent his days traveling (especially to Reggie and Rachel's favorite spot, Savannah), going out to eat, watching game shows, taking afternoon naps, and eating mixed nuts.
Most of all, Reggie was known to be a family man whose greatest joys were simply to see his family happy and thriving. Any mention of his grandchildren brought the biggest smile to Reggie's face and the sweetest twinkle to his eyes. He beamed with pride at the very thought of his family succeeding, and comforted his loved ones when life brought trials and heartbreaks.
Reggie will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. In fact, to know him was to be his best friend. He had lots of best friends.
A Funeral Service for Reggie will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, 3 Cotton Street, in Porterdale, with Pastor Roger Cato officiating. Interment will follow in Cheney-Towns Cemetery, Rutledge. Friends are invited to visit with his family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, January 20, from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M.
