Dr. Roy William Hammond, ThD, of McDonough, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2021, at the age of 74. Rev. Hammond was a beloved pastor of Friendship Baptist Church of Stockbridge, Hydes Chapel Baptist Church of Conyers, Rex Road Baptist Church of Rex, True Gospel Baptist Church of Conyers and Friendship Baptist Church in Fayetteville. As a Doctor of Theology, he helped to win many souls to the Lord and guiding them in His Grace. He will forever be remembered as a man, a child, and a warrior of God. His hands have baptized many, and his words have brought lost souls abroad to the guiding light of our Lord and Savior above. He served for his country in the Navy as a 1st Class Radioman of Division and Operations Navigation, stationed in San Diego, California. He proudly served for his community for 50 plus years as an HVAC entrepreneur, Hammond Heating and Air.
God has a way of bringing two hearts together for a lifetime of love that sets an example to others of what a marriage should be; Sheila was his true love, his soulmate, and the definition of a pastor's wife. God brought them together from the age of 2, and to be side by side was such an honor for both for 56 years. The life made by these two is a dream come true and a love story to capture hearts and remind us all that true love never fails.
His girls were his pride and joy. Cher DeAnn made his heart smile with her precious singing - and caring for her Daddy was the most precious sight. The loss of his baby girl, Kerry, was one of the hardest things he went through.
He was a man of many trades, anything from flying airplanes to building his home with his bare hands. He lived his life for his wife, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and the church family which was built over the many years of guidance and reminding each one how much Jesus loves. If there was ever a man to have the honor of knowing in this lifetime, it was Rev. Roy Hammond. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kerry LeAnn Riley; grandson, Steven Keith Durden; mother, Virginia Hammond; father, Roy William Hammond, Sr.; brother, Mark Andrew Hammond.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Hammond; daughter and son-in-law, Cher and Doyle Smith, Sr., of Newborn; sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Danny Scott of Whitesburg, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley and Marcia Hammond of Jackson, Tony and Sandy Hammond; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Doyle Edward, Jr., and Pamela Smith (Bo, Trip and Cassie), Cheri and Rodney Kite (Victoria and Callie), Nicholas and Ariel Smith (Ryder and Carli), KJ and Ashley Durden (Cameron, Ryleigh, Hunter and Stanley, III), Amanda and Larry Mitchell (Jeremiah, Olivia and Isaiah), Ashley and Antrize Shepherd (Keiandre, Keiara, Keiona, Keilen).
