obit for Al Strickland

Al Strickland of Oxford, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the age of 76. After attending the University of Alabama for a short time and playing football for the notorious Bear Bryant, Mr. Strickland enlisted in the United States Army. With hard work, dedication and specific skills, he earned his place and became a part of the elite United States Special Forces. Mr. Strickland had the gift of being both kind-hearted and generous and was always helping others in need. In earlier times, he loved riding bicycles and playing in his band, Big Al's Freeway Express. Eventually, Mr. Strickland would lend his musical talents to entertain residents at nursing homes and assisted-living communities. When he wasn't singing or spending time with family and friends, he was on the road riding his Harley and loving life. Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his son, Ben Strickland; and parents, Luther and Winnie (Smith) Strickland.

 

Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 46 years, Alice Strickland; daughters, Alicia Lucas of Pell City, AL, Christina Strickland of Clearwater, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Wendy Hodges of Cleveland, TN, Andreas Strickland of Covington, GA, Keith and Silina Hodges of Sharpsburg, GA, Randy Strickland of Birmingham, AL, Jackie Strickland of Oxford, GA; grandchildren, Nikki and Aaron Schwartz, Jeff Hodges, Jonathan and Jayme Hodges, Kylene Hodges, Jacob Hodges, Shane Hodges, Dalton Lucas, Heather Lucas, Marshall Hodges, Brooke Hodges, Cole Hodges, Andrea Strickland, Turner Strickland, Adam Strickland, Luther Strickland, Aedyn Ryan; great-grandchildren, Emily Hodges, Georgia Hodges, Audrey Hodges, Ali Grace Schwartz, Charli Rose Schwartz; as well as brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Nita Strickland of Moody, AL.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Strickland will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019, 1:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor David Payne officiating and entombment following at Memory Chapel Mausoleum in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, two hours prior to his service, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
