Flora Mae Bailey Brown - update

Flora Mae Bailey Brown, of Loganville, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021, at the age of 97. Flora retired from K-Mart at the age of 62 in 1986. She loved her church and was a member of East Newton Baptist Church until she moved to Walton County where she joined Gum Creek Baptist Church. Flora loved singing "I'll Fly Away" with her grandsons, Jeremy and Mike while they played the guitar. She always adored her flowers, planting and making them grow. In her spare time, Flora enjoyed eating sweets, and making cakes, candy, and anything sweet. She outlived all her relatives, her brothers, and sisters, Ida, Alfred, Willie, Florence, Bessie, Claude, and Edgar. Flora was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Sidney Brown; parents, Miner Monroe and Sarah Elizabeth Bailey.

 

Special singers, Jeremy, Mike, Linda and Paul.

 

Pallbearers, Sheriff Ezell Brown, Dave Watson, Ricky Elder, and Ronald Garrett.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Cherie Mitchell and Tommy Smith; grandchildren, Julie Ramey and husband, Mike, Jeremy Roden and Michelle Weir; great-grandchildren, Patrick Ramey, Joshua Ramey, Jacob Roden, Allie Roden; as well as special nieces and nephews including but not limited to, Reed Dilbeck, Ralph Dilbeck, Donna and Bob Hawkins, Linda and Paul Ray Morgan, Wanda and Mike Prince.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Brown will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2021, 3:30 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Paul Ray Morgan officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, Tuesday, June 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Martha Baxter

Martha Baxter, of Covington, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021, at the age of 67. Ms. Baxter was a one-of-kind, loving woman who was always smiling. She was a people person and like to talk to and would call you anytime of the day or night. Ms. Baxter enjoyed a lot of things in life such as shopping, tubing, cooking, and doing puzzles and crossword searches. In addition, she like to collect lighthouses and knickknacks, and was creative when it came to crocheting and knitting. Ms. Baxter also enjoyed traveling to the mountains, watching the Braves, MASH, and Dr. Who, and playing video games. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christy Baxter; parents, Billy and Rosey Baxter.

 

Survivors include her grandchildren, Billy New, Trent New, Destiny New; Great-grandchildren, Dylan Drake, Nathan Marcus, Jaydon Andrew, Olivia Kate, Violet Ruth; as well as other loving family members.

 

A Funeral Service for Ms. Baxter will be held Thursday, June 3, 4:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Dwight Moody officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family two hours prior to her service, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to help the family with funeral expenses.

Robert Wayne McGiboney

Robert Wayne McGiboney, of Oxford, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021, at the age of 77. Mr. McGiboney was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. He loved to tell stories and was a man of many jokes and good times. Mr. McGiboney was a well-known friend, businessman, and never met a stranger; with his abundance of knowledge, he gave great advice and had a home remedy for everything. He loved sunshine and never turned down a trip to the beach. His pride in his entrepreneurship was inspiring to many. Mr. McGiboney will be remembered as the most loving husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. McGiboney was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Hilda Ann McGiboney; beloved partner, Judy Eaton Nusser; parents, Robert and Marie McGiboney; sister, Mary Janice; brother, Jimmy McGiboney; great-granddaughter, Remington Hunter-Ann Williamson.

William "Billy" David Almand

William "Billy" David Almand, of Social Circle, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at the age of 76. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was the owner of Almand Construction Company for 48 years and a member of First Baptist Church of Social Circle. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Lewis and Lucy Bell Almand; and brothers, Thomas Almand, Gene Almand.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Almand; daughters, Sheila Almand, Stephanie Almand; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Billy will be held Saturday, May 29, 2021, 11:00 A.M., at First Baptist Church, 195 N. A devoted and dedicated mother, Mrs. Daniel loved her children and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed cooking for them on Sundays. Joseph Coburn Obituary

Joseph Eugene Coburn, a long-time Covington resident, passed away Friday, May 14, 2021, at the age of 61. Mr. Coburn was talented mechanically with cars and served as owner and operator of United Muffler & Brake for over 20 years. He was a strong Christian and loved the Lord. Mr. Coburn was a funny guy, great story teller, and a wonderful family man; he always thought of his family and kept in touch with them. He loved his daughter with all his heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Coburn; mother and stepfather, Dessie and Bill McGilton; and father, Gene Coburn.

 

Mr. Coburn is survived by his daughter, Josie Coburn; sisters, Sonya Lane (Terry), Cheryl Mitchell, Debbie Smith, Shauna McGilton; brothers, Brian "Chad" McGilton (Angelina), Mark McGilton (Natasha), Craig McGilton, and Billy McGilton.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Coburn will be held at a later date.

Doris Marie Highsmith Obituary

Doris Marie Highsmith, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the age of 83. Mrs. Highsmith obtained an associate degree in theatre and enjoyed acting in her younger years. She had a considerable interest in history, and her studies focused heavily on southern history and reading about the Antebellum period. In addition to history, Mrs. Highsmith also enjoyed studying genealogy. When she was not working on her studies, Mrs. Highsmith enjoyed working on cross stitching. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Randolph Highsmith.

 

Mrs. Highsmith is survived by her daughters, Christie Dunn Osborn, Terri Montgomery, Susan Elaine Highsmith; her sons, Brett Eric Highsmith, Jon Highsmith; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Highsmith will be held Thursday, May 27, 2021, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home one hour prior to her service from 2:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M.

Raymond Robinson Jr. Obituary

Raymond Robinson Jr., of Covington, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at the age of 60. Jr. was a true patriot, serving in the Army National Guard in the First Battalion 121st infantry. While in the Army, he was a Heavy Anti-Armor Weapons Crewman, and fighting vehicle infantry man. Jr. was a devout Christian and member of Madison Pentecostal Church. He was a big movie buff; he loved watching movies and westerns. Jr. was a ball of sunshine. His laughter was infectious to all. His kindness and compassion was a strong foundation for the man we all loved.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette Robinson; and brother, Wayne Robinson.

 

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Karen Pickens Robinson; his daughters, Tonya Nave (Joseph), Tiffany Campbell, Kayla Hughes; his stepdaughter, Amanda May (Scotty); his stepsons, Jason Van-Meter (Shannon), Jerry Van-Meter (Tabitha); 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his father, Raymond Lee Robinson Sr.; his sister, Penny Cheek (Doug); and his brother, Dale Robinson (Sallie).

Gloria Holifield Colbert

Gloria Holifield Colbert, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at the age of 75. Born and raised in Covington, she was the co-owner of C&C Printing, with her husband, Harry (Len) Colbert who she was married to for 53 years. She was also an employee of AT&T where she retired after a dedicated 31 years of service. Mrs. Colbert Was strong willed and very independent. She enjoyed being outside with her fur baby, Sudie, and loved listening to music and dancing along to it. Mrs. Colbert was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Len Colbert; daughter, Wendy Lynn McKinley; parents, Ide Aaron Holifield and Sara Johnston Stewart; brother, Larry Ide Holifield.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her fiancé, Tex Evans; grandson, Vance Coleman Bevil; brother-in-law, Phillip Colbert and wife, Debra; as well as many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Robert "Pug" Waits Obituary

Robert "Pug" Waits, of Conyers, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021, at the age of 59. Mr. Waits worked at CMC Environmental Inc. He loved fishing. Mr. Waits also enjoyed playing poker, and trips to the flea market collecting "treasures". He was also an avid gardener, specializing in growing vegetables. The ones that knew him best called him Pepaw; he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Betty Sue (Spivey) Waits; sister, Donna Lee Waits; brothers, Donald Gene Waits and Jimmy Waits.

 

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 34 years, Sandra Lee Waits; daughters and their spouses, Tiffany and Allen Batchelor, of Locust Grove, Stephanie and Justin Reyes, of Canton, Brandy Segars, of Douglasville, Rhonda Waits, of Conyers; son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Tommy" and Nikki Waits, of Mansfield; six grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Terry Underwood.

Steven McDonald Obituary

Steven McDonald, of Monroe, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021, at the age of 35. Employed by McDonald Welding, Steven was an excellent mechanic; he could build anything from a computer to a vehicle. He took great pride in his work, if he ever had a question, he found an answer for it. Additionally, he was a great negotiator and debater. Steven enjoyed his time outside by the lake fishing and camping. He was also an avid gamer. Steven loved playing Dungeons and Dragons. He also had a love for the Renaissance Era, cosplaying, and Live Action Role Play. Steven was closest to his late brother, Michael, and in recent years had become close to his brother, Josh. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, and grandson. Steven was preceded in death by his brother, Michael McDonald Jr.

 

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Pamela Wheeler; father, Michael Jeff McDonald; brother and sister-in-law, Josh and Kim McDonald; maternal grandparents, Jackie and Jessie Sewell; paternal grandparents, Stanley and Carolyn McDonald; uncles, Scott Sewell, Brian McDonald; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Richard Eugene Brown

Richard Eugene Brown, of Covington, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021, at the age of 84. He was born and raised in Atlanta but loved spending time in Wilkes Co. with his grandparents. Mr. Brown proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for three years and retired from Bellsouth after many dedicated years. He was an active member of Prospect United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years where he served in numerous leadership positions. Mr. Brown enjoyed being a Scout Master, Youth Counselor, and coaching little league baseball. In his spare time, he liked to hunt and fish. Mr. Brown will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Virginia Brown; brother, Pete Brown.

 

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Linda Brown; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Melody Brown, Jeff and Molly Brown, Michael Brown; grandchildren, Graham Brown, Ellis Brown, Jake Brown, Brett Brown; brother, Ken Brown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Brown will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021, 2:00 P.M., at Prospect United Methodist Church, 6752 GA-212, in Covington, with Rev. Ronny Brannen, Rev. Was Privett, and Rev. Scott Brown officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church prior to his service, from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church.

Betty Tant

 

Betty Tant, of Covington, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021, at the age of 71. Mrs. Tant was a lifelong resident of Covington and was employed by Gates Rubber Company for 10 years. She enjoyed her days freshwater fishing where the fish were biting. Mrs. Tant will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Howard L. Tant; parents, Odell and Nellie Ruth (Hamlin) Gunn; sister, Mary Tant; and brother, James Gunn.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Michael Ray, Susan Few and Tony Baker, Julie and Brian Lockley; grandchildren and their spouses, Yancy and Joyce-Ann Tant, Ashley Ray, Preston and Ragan Tant, Ansleigh Ray, Brianna Lockley, Bryce Lockley; great-grandchildren, Mason McLendon, Ryan Parrish, Archer Tant, Elijah Wilson, Peyton Wilson; sisters, Nettie Shead, Joyce Milligan; brother, Charles Gunn; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, Sunday, May 16, from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M.

Edna Joyce Beasley Obituary

Edna Joyce Beasley, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at the age of 72. Mrs. Beasley was a devout Christian, and member of East Newton Baptist Church. She carved out a career at Piedmont Molding for seventeen years and worked for Stanley Tools from 1997-2002. She loved working on her yard and her flowers. Additionally, she enjoyed going to different thrift stores looking for a good find. Mrs. Beasley was very independent, selfless, and had a very giving heart. She was a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Beasley was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Jessie Louise Moore; and husband, Herbert Marvin Beasley.

 

Her memory will be cherished dearly by her daughter, Crystal Gayle Beasley; and brother, Herbert David Beasley.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Beasley will be held at a later date.

Renee Hardegree, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at the age of 52. Ms. Hardegree had a strong personality; she was bold and determined and will be remembered for her love of Coca-Cola. Ms. Hardegree was preceded in death by her mothers, Margaret Jeanette Bagley; father, Jackie Lanier Hardegree.

James Gunn

James Gunn, of Porterdale, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021, at the age of 74. James enjoyed attending local churches in Porterdale and was always the first to arrive for services. He loved walking the streets of Porterdale and talking to everyone, hanging out at the Salvation Army and Tava's Diner, and collecting watches. In James' spare time, he enjoyed being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Odell and Nellie Gunn; sister, Mary Tant.

 

Those left to cherish his memory are his sisters and brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Milligan, Betty Tant, Nettie Shed; brothers, Charles "Boogie" Gunn, Thomas Conner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for James will be held Thursday, May 13, 2021, 12:30 P.M., at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 7037 GA-212, in Covington, with Pastor Wayne Whitley and Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family 30 minutes prior to his service, at the cemetery, from 12 Noon – 12:30 P.M. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to any of the churches in Porterdale or the Gospel Mission Church, 755 Almon Rd, Covington, GA 30014.

Obituary for Earnest "Pete" Mask

Earnest "Pete" Mask, of Covington, passed away Friday, May 7, 2021, at the age of 89. Mr. Mask was a devout Christian and member of Gaithers Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending his time in the woods hunting or by the lake fishing. Mr. Mask was a loving husband and family man; he loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. J. Mask and Era Mask.   

 

His memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife, Sylvia Mask; children and their spouses, Richard and Debbie Mask, Teresa and Dicky Thomson, Maria and Tommy Ashby; grandchildren, Robin, Rick, Beth, Frank, Alan, Eliysha; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Doris Marie Collinsworth Cotton Obituary

Doris Marie Collinsworth Cotton, aged 90, of Covington, GA died peacefully of natural causes on May 7, 2021.

 

Doris was born July 19, 1930 in Paxton, FL to Walter and Rebecca Collinsworth.  She was married to O'Neal Cotton for 53 years.  They have 4 daughters:  Becky Bolden (husband Steve Bolden); Cindy Bailey (husband Roy Bailey); Melanie Spikes (husband Tony Spikes); Teresa Hanna (husband Terry Hanna).  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters (Melba Hart and Ruby McKinney), and granddaughter (Rachel Bailey).

 

Doris worked for the federal government for 25 years, primarily at the VA Medical Centers in Birmingham and Atlanta.  She also enjoyed working part-time at Joann Fabrics for 20+ years.

 

She is survived by her sister Vassie Harrison of Paxton, FL and her brother Frank Collinsworth of Orangevale, CA; her 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, with one on the way in September.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Cotton will be held Monday, May 10, 2021, 4:00 P.M., at Conyers Church of God, 1825 GA-138 NE, in Conyers. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church two hours prior to her service from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. under the direction of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home in Covington, Georgia.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Cotton will be held Wednesday, May 12, 2021, 1:00 P.M., at Paxton Assembly of God, 978 County Hwy 147 E, in Paxton, Florida, with interment following in Paxton Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family two hours prior to her service at the church from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. under the direction of Evans Funeral Home in Florala, Alabama.
