James Oliver Byrd of Oxford, passed away March 8, 2017, at 86 years of age. A lifelong resident of Newton County, Mr. Byrd proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from General Motors Lakewood after 38 years of service and began a new career at Ginn Motor Co. in Covington, where he worked for 16 years. In addition, Mr. Byrd was a member of the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge in Covington and a charter member of North Newton Volunteer Fire Department. He attended both Alcovy and Shiloh United Methodist Churches. Mr. Byrd was an avid Atlanta Braves and UGA Bulldog fan. He will be remembered as a loving family man and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Annie Mae (Kitchens) Byrd; and brother, Harold Byrd.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Rosa Lee Byrd of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Cindy Byrd of Conyers; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and B.J. Smith of Loganville; grandchildren, Bradley and Jenny Smith of Chatsworth, Ashley Smith of Loganville, Mary Byrd of Atlanta, Jennifer Byrd of Conyers; great-grandchildren, Hudson Smith, Hawkins Smith; sisters, Mary Jean Davenport of Oxford and Frances Martin of Conyers.
A Funeral Service for Mr. Byrd will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Mike Wadley and Dr. Alan Posey officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, Friday, March 10, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
