Obit - Mike Hamner

Mike Hamner, of Covington, passed away March 31, 2018, at the age of 67. Mike attended Norman Park High School, in Norman Park, GA, where he held an undefeated basketball record. Following high school, he attended Valdosta State University, and later obtained his master's degree, in Special Education, from Georgia State University. Mike was an active member of First Baptist Church, in Covington, where he served as Deacon for many years. When he wasn't teaching, he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, fishing, golfing and playing tennis – for which he once won the title 'Georgia State Champion'. He adored his family, loved spending time with them, and was especially close to his grandchildren, Bailey and Logan, and his nephew, Wil. Mike was a selfless friend, who cherished the close relationships with his friends and neighbors, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Nell Copeland; and his brother, Bud Brogden.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 25 years, Sheryl Hamner; daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and Josh Franklin of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Justin and Ericka Hamner of Hampton, Brad Harper of Covington; grandchildren, Bailey Franklin, Logan Franklin; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Hank Meders of Omega, GA; brother, Kenny Hamner of Tifton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mike will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2018, 3 PM, at First Baptist Church of Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt and Rev. Mike Franklin officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, April 2, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made, in Mike's memory, to First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street NE, Covington, GA 30014; or Solid Rock Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1144, Covington, GA 30015.
