obit for Mrs. Verline (Nellie) Hall
Verline (Nellie) Hall of Covington, passed away January 28, 2017, at the age of 86. Mrs. Hall, an employee of Bibb Manufacturing and Beaver Manufacturing for many years, also worked for Oxford Industries. She was currently a member of County Line Baptist Church and attended High Point Baptist Church in past years. Working in her yard and quilting were favorite pastimes for Mrs. Hall. She took pleasure in making things for her children and will be remembered for making blankets for Christmas gifts one year. Affectionately known as "Granny" to her family and friends, she was regarded as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Hall also had a gift for singing and playing the guitar. During camping trips, she would share her love of music with others as they gathered around her campsite listening to her sing and play. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Hall; son, Tim Hall; sister, Betty Johnson; brothers, Cherry Johnson, Larry Johnson, Terry Johnson; parents, James Grover and Ruby Lee (Hawkins) Johnson.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Rita S. Thomas, Sande and Ronald Palecek; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathy Hall, all of Covington; brother and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Laura Johnson of Conyers, Jane Johnson of Jackson; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Wendy McKinley of Covington, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017, at the age of 52. In addition to being devoted to her family, Mrs. McKinley adored her cats Oscar, Felix, and Myrna. She was also passionate about breeding and showing Bengal cats. Preceding her in death was her father, Harry (Len) Colbert; maternal grandparents, Ide and Sara (Johnston) Holifield; paternal grandparents, James and Clarice (Milligan) Colbert; uncle, Larry Holifield.

Randy Rogers of Covington, passed away January 26, 2017, at the age of 78. Mr. Rogers, a devoted family man, was affectionately known as "Big Daddy" to his children and grandchildren. Armed with an infectious personality, he will be remembered for joking with his grandchildren and living life to the fullest. Having a heart for the elderly, Mr. Rogers was a dedicated volunteer at Newton Hospital. He also enjoyed hunting, especially deer and bird hunting, and coached the Atlanta Gas softball team. Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Gertrude (Wood) Rogers.

William (Bill) Pooser of Covington, passed away January 17, 2017, at the age of 92. Mr. Pooser proudly served his country in the Navy during WW II. As a faithful servant of the Lord, he attended several churches during his lifetime, but was currently a member of Greater Love Baptist Church. Mr. Pooser's greatest mission in life was not to have material things, but to reach others through his love for Christ. When he reached Heaven, we know he was welcomed with 'well done my good and faithful servant'. Mr. Pooser will be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, and faithful friend. He was preceded in death by his son, William (Billy) Arthur Pooser, III: parents, William Arthur, Sr., and Violia Pooser; and brother, Clyde Pooser.

Joseph "Joe" Alexander Levinsky of Oxford passed away January 15, 2017, at 80 years of age. Mr. Levinsky was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Covington for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzie Levinsky and his parents.

Jimmy E. Maloy of Covington passed away January 15, 2017, at 82 years of age. A native of Porterdale, Mr. Maloy retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He then began a 20-year career working for the Orange County Florida Sheriff Department. Mr. Maloy enjoyed golfing and watching football. He will be remembered as a funny, generous, and kind-hearted man who kept an immaculate yard. Mr. Maloy was preceded in death by his parents, Schley Howard and Edna Irene (Ferguson) Maloy; and sister, Ruth McRee.

Shirley P. Sheridan of Newborn, passed away January 13, 2017, at the age of 94. In addition to
the Pine Grove Ladies Club, Mrs. Sheridan was a member of the Covington Service Guild for over 20 years, and the Newton County Hospital Auxiliary - with over 5500 hours of volunteer work. Mrs. Sheridan was a member of Newborn United Methodist Church. She loved playing bridge, and could be found climbing trees at Arbor Day celebrations in Newborn, GA. Mrs. Sheridan lived all over the world, and taught many years as an elementary school teacher in several school systems across the nation. She was an excellent teacher who dearly loved her students. During her youth, Mrs. Sheridan showed Five-Gaited Saddlebred horses. Preceding her in death was her husband, Roger W. Sheridan; parents, Charles Cutler and Margaret (Harris) Parsons.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-laws, Kathleen Sheridan and Richard Farber of Holland, Margaret and Kyser Cartledge of Conyers, GA, Susan Johnston of Newborn, GA, Sherrie Sheridan of Lula, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Sheridan of Roanoke, VA, Larry and Debra Sheridan of Marietta, GA; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Rick Guilliams of Conyers, passed away January 11, 2017, at the age of 45. Mr. Guilliams, an employee at Main Street of Conyers, was an avid outdoorsman. In addition to fresh and salt-water fishing, he enjoyed deer hunting, especially with his bow. Mr. Guilliams loved the spirit of the wolf and the eagle. Among his other hobbies, he also liked traveling and watching movies. Mr. Guilliams was preceded in death by his father, Rick E. Guilliams.

Vilma Ansley (Bim) Meyer of Oxford, passed away peacefully in her sleep, January 11, 2017, at 89 years of age. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Meyer was a teacher with the Newton County Department of Education from 1950 to 1969, at which time she retired for health reasons. During her adult years, she enjoyed playing tennis, traveling and playing bridge. Mrs. Meyer shared her love of bridge when writing a column in the Covington News, aptly titled, "Bridge by Bim." She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Mary (Hilley) Ansley.
Survivors include her loving husband of 67 1/2 years, Dr. Carlos B. Meyer; daughters and son-in-law, Maridel Meyer Reynolds of Monticello, Cyndi M. Angie Donat of Covington passed away January 10, 2017, at 44 years of age. Having been diagnosed with leukemia at just 2 ½ years of age, she was a survivor for more than 30 years because she was a fighter. Angie accepted Christ as her Savior in 1983 and was a member of White Oaks Baptist Church in Dallas, GA. She was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Angie was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Susie Pitts and Maggie Gault.

Timothy David McDaniel of Oxford passed away January 6, 2017, at 62 years of age. Mr. McDaniel enjoyed eating sweets, making jewelry, and traveling, especially to the beach. Richard Carl Sticher of Covington, passed away January 7, 2017, at the age of 83. Mr. Sticher was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church. He served with the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief and the Pace Masonic Lodge. Mr. Sticher loved working as a pipefitter with the Local 72, especially during his time on the Alaskan Pipeline. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed the outdoors, working on his farm and hunting. Mr. Sticher was also known to have a great affection for coffee – always having a cup close at hand. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Melissa Louise Sticher; mother, Lenice Ruth (Tubbs) Sticher.

Lamar Sowell of Mansfield, passed away January 2, 2017, following a brief illness. He was 88 years of age at the time of his death. Son of the late, Isaac "Ike" Lamar Sowell, Sr. and Martha Belle Duke Sowell, Lamar was born December 16, 1928 in McDonough, GA. Lamar moved to Covington as a young boy, where he later met and married Barbara Penn Sowell, his wife of 60 years. He was a life-long member of Bethany Baptist Church in McDonough and attended Mansfield Baptist Church. Lamar served on the Covington City Council in the early seventies, and was on the Board of Directors for the Covington Housing Authority. His first job was working as the manager of Allen's Five and Ten Cent Store on the square in Covington. He was well-known for giving many Covington teenagers their first job. In the 1970's, Lamar opened the Textile Outlet of Covington, next door to their home on Washington Street. He later owned and operated L&S Aluminum Sales, a chain link fence company in Covington. Additionally, he also owned the Village Flea Market on Highway 81. His favorite pastimes included restoring old cars, playing golf, and enjoying hamburgers with friends at Hester's Pool Room. After retiring he and Barbara enjoyed taking bus trips, spending time at their summer place in Hiawassee, and watching T.V. They especially cherished the time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Tiffany Strickland, Samuel and Bonnie Strickland, all of Covington; four grandchildren; sister, Tina Simpson of Alpharetta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Sharon Simpson of Homer, Claude and Debbie Simpson of Clairmont, Carl and Jan Strickland of Oxford, Timmy and Linda Simpson of Cumming; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Strickland will be held Friday, January 6, 2017, 3:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pastor Mike Franklin officiating. Friends may visit with the family Thursday, January 5, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Timothy Wayne Hall
Timothy Wayne Hall of Covington, passed away January 2, 2017, at 67 years of age. Mr. Hall worked as an independent handyman, doing both construction and automotive work. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and telling funny stories. He was preceded in death by his father, J.B. Hall.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Marie Owens, Tonya and Brad Sears, Misty Hall, Crystal Hall; mother, Verline A. Hall; three grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Rita S. Thomas, Sande L. and Ronald Palecek; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Steven and Kathy Hall; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Rev. Dickie W. Johnson
Rev. Dickie W. Johnson of Covington, passed away January 1, 2017 at 72 years of age. He was ordained in Brunswick, GA, at the age of 19 and served as a pastor for 52 years. Preacher Dickie pastored churches in Wheeler, Telfair, Laurens, Berrien, and Wayne counties before coming to Newton County, where he served as pastor for Porterdale Baptist Church for 32 years. Preacher Dickie was an avid deer hunter and Georgia Bulldog fan. He always supported his grandsons in whatever activity they were involved. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and cherished pastor and friend. Preacher Dickie was preceded in death by his parents, W.D. and Mary Alice (Brown) Johnson.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Polly Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, René and D.J. Seals of Covington; grandsons, Jared Seals, Parker Wayne Seals; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and John Carlton, Melissa and Pat Reddish; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Sarah Johnson; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service for Preacher Dickie will be held Thursday, January 5, 2017, 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, Covington, with Rev. David Wheeler and Dr. Cody McNutt officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday, January 4, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Covington. In lieu of flowers contributions in Preacher Dickie's memory may be made to Porterdale Baptist Church, P.O. Box 637, Porterdale, GA 30070.
