Bud Bales of Lilburn, passed away December 11, 2013, at the age of 75. Mr. Bales was a veteran of the United States Army, having proudly served his country during the Korean War. While in Korea, he was quarterback for the Army football team. He was an exceptional athlete, and even played baseball with Pete Rose. In addition to his love for football and baseball, he was a Kentucky Colonel and avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. Mr. Bales worked in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years, while he owned and operated both Bud's Picnic and Bud's Eastside Café, both in Decatur. He loved his family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Billie (Chavis) Bales; and his brother, Tom Bales.
Survivors include his daughter, Allison Bales Niegowski of Barnwell, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Laura Bales of Covington, Michael and Susan Bales of Barnwell, SC, Seth and Shannon Bales of Auburn, AL, Spencer Bales of Fayetteville; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Bales will be held Thursday, December 19, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Adam Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, three hours prior to the service, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made, to any organization of your choice, to benefit a Veteran.
