Obit - Vennie Bell Daniel

Vennie Bell Daniel of Covington, passed away December 29, 2014, at the age of 87. Mrs. Daniel enjoyed visiting yard sales, and in addition to working in her own garden, she liked admiring others' flowers, as well. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Daniel.

 

Survivors include her sons, JR Daniel, Calvin Daniel; grandchildren, Shane Daniel, Tina Daniel, Scott Daniel; great-grandchildren, Jimmy Daniel Cheek, Tyler Cheek, Lexie Daniel; and her brother, Tom D. Watson.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Daniel will be held Friday, January 2, 2015, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, December 31, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

Obit - Bill M. Bailey

Bill M. Bailey of Monticello, passed away December 29, 2014, at the age of 84. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and served one year in Korea before being honorably discharged. Mr. Bailey was a member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church, and former member of Gaithers United Methodist Church. He worked more than 40 years in the construction business. A very charitable person, it brought him joy to donate to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, an organization close to his heart. Additionally, he was always willing to give to others without expecting anything in return. Mr. Bailey enjoyed camping, loved gospel singing and cherished the time he spent with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bobbie Bailey; sons and daughter-in-law, Doug Bailey of Monticello, Darrell and Janie Bailey of Canton; grandchildren, Shaun and Grace Bailey, Patrick Burnette, Andrea and Shawn Ondeck, Jessica Bailey; great-grandchildren, Hunter Burnette, Gavin Ondeck, Nathan Bailey, Gwyneth Ondeck, Joshua Bailey; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Bailey will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Randy Reese officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, prior to the service, from 12:00 – 2:30 PM.

Obit - Sharon Maddox

Sharon Maddox of Porterdale passed away December 24, 2014, at the age of 66.  Mrs. Maddox was a member of Gaither's United Methodist Church, a Sunday School Class Treasurer and loved her family especially her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Joann Knight, Faye Aiken, Vivian Maddox; brother, JC Maddox and grandson, Gary Daniel Cronan.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Wendy Odum of Oxford; sons and daughter-in-law,

Alvin and Angie Cronan of Covington, Sammy Cronan of Covington; grandchildren, Michael Alvin Cronan, Jr. and Tori Cronan, Samantha Shay Cronan, Samuel Wayne Cronan, Jr., Mollie Elizabeth Cronan, Garrett James Odum, Ryder James Cronan and Lynley Suzanne Cronan; great grandchildren, MacKenzie Sha Cronan and Mason Harrison Cronan; sisters, Glenda Austin of Greta, LA, Gail Lindsey of Porterdale,  Betty Shaw of Covington, Shirley Crawford of Porterdale; brothers Lynwood Maddox of Tucker, David Maddox of Fairmont, Wayne Maddox of Porterdale; and several nieces and nephews.

Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Danny Standard and Terry Carter officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, December 28, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  Interment will be held in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Jackson, Georgia.

Obit - Gregg Moss

Gregg Moss of Covington, age 57, died December 26, 2014. He enjoyed traveling to the beach and going to the lake to water ski. Gregg was always willing to help others and never expected anything in return. He loved his family dearly, cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Sammy Moss; and his sister, Cindy Savage.

 

Survivors include his wife, Judy Moss of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Aimee and Bill Lawson of Covington, Cassie and Curtis Singleton of Oxford, Katie Moss of Covington, Abbie Moss of Belcher Town, MA; grandchildren, Madison and Gabe Lawson, Cambree and Coulter Singleton, Ava and Kayson Moss; mother, Nevada Moss of Covington; brother, Derrick Moss of Mansfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Jean Camp Boyer

Jean Camp Boyer of Conyers, passed away December 26, 2014, at the age of 83. Mrs. Boyer was raised in Haleyville, Alabama, to the late John and Floy (McCrellis) Camp. She retired from Bellsouth after 32 years of dedicated service. Mrs. Boyer was a very talented cook, and enjoyed traveling and entertaining her family and friends. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Andrew Boyer.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Joe Kirby of Dothan, AL; granddaughter, Emily Ann Kirby of St. Simons Island, GA; grandson, Ryan Andrew Kirby of Birmingham, AL; sisters, Polly Connelly, Linda Callaghan; brothers, Jack Camp, Louie Camp, all of Chicago, IL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jean Thomas of Social Circle, passed away December 25, 2014, at the age of 70. She was a faithful member of Porterdale Baptist Church and cherished her church family dearly. She enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family. Jean was a compassionate woman, who always wanted to do for others without expecting anything in return. She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma (Lowe) Knight; father, Coley Spires; and her brother, Howell Spires.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, Bobby Thomas; daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Jim Malcom of Bostwick; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Sara Thomas of Monroe; grandchildren, Carl Johnson, Maci Thomas, Victoria and Taylor McDaniel, Savannah Thomas; sister, Miriam Carrow of N. Augusta, SC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Carolyn Evans Anderson

Carolyn Evans Anderson of Covington, GA, passed away in her home December 24, 2014. She was born September 17, 1930, in Sweetwater, TN, to the late Ottis and Addifine Evans. She was an active member of her church, St. Andrews Charismatic Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for many years, and dedicated her time in creating the pall that is used by the church. In addition to her service to the church, she devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to all whom she came in contact with. Mrs. Anderson also enjoyed sewing and embroidery. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

 

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lemuel Anderson; daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Gregory Lancaster of Covington, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Anita Anderson of Social Circle, GA; three grandchildren, Josh Anderson, Nick Anderson, Kaitie and Robert Clark; and her brother, George Evans of Knoxville, TN.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Anderson will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2014, 6:00 PM, at St. Andrews Charismatic Episcopal Church, 375 Old Oxford Road, in Covington, with Father Kerry Wells and Tommy Stubbs officiating. Obit - Clinton Hassas

Clinton Hallas of Covington passed away December 24, 2014, at the age of 79. Mr. Hallas was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served with the 7th fleet on the USS New Jersey during the Korean War. He was an active member and deacon of East Newton Baptist Church. He earned his pilot's license, circa 1972, and enjoyed flying ever since. Additionally, he enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, playing golf, traveling and camping. Mr. Hallas loved his family dearly and cherished the time he spent with them. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Laytham; his son, Terry Fortson; and his brothers, Glenn and Bryan Hallas.

 

Survivors include his loving wife, Nell Hallas of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Clinton and Kristi Hallas of Monticello, Steven and Denise Fortson of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Emily, Amanda, Jonathan, Shana, Danny, Amy, Steven, Jeremy and Sean; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; sisters, Judy and Beverly; brother, Melvin Hallas; and several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Martha Annette Williams

Annette Williams, age 68, of Covington, passed away December 21, 2014. Mrs. Williams was born in Columbia, Alabama, to the late George and Mary Elizabeth (Railey) Rolison. She enjoyed working in the garden, cooking for her family and traveling to the beach and the mountains. Mrs. Williams had a heart of gold and was always willing to help anyone in need. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who adored her family and cherished her time with them. She was preceded in death by her son, Melton Wade Williams; and her sister, Mary Ann Becknell.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Frank Williams; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kelly Williams, all of Covington; grandchildren, Kaley Williams, Wade Williams, Urijah Williams; five great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Denison of Covington, Glenda and James York of Hamilton, Sara and Jimmy Ridling of Covington, Janice and Michael Farron of Indianapolis, IN, Jimmy Becknell of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Emmett and Lori Rolison of Indianapolis, IN; several nieces and nephews; as well as her loving pet, Roxie.

Helen M. McCullough

Helen M. McCullough, of Conyers, passed away December 20, 2014, at the age of 92.  Mrs. McCullough was a long-time member of Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Love Partners Sunday School Class.  She retired from Lithonia Lighting after 29 years of service, and had previously worked at Porterdale Mill.  Mrs. McCullough loved vegetable and flower gardening.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam H. McCullough; son, Paul McCullough, and several brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Terry Robinson of Lilburn; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Pat McCullough of Dawsonville, Billy McCullough of Macon; grandchildren, Eric Robinson, Alicia Smith, Caroline Bonalski, Lydell McCullough, Chuck McCullough, Christy McCullough; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Jenette Wright of Perry; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Raymond J. Cook

Raymond J. Cook of Covington, passed away December 21, 2014, at the age of 90. Mr. Cook proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed woodworking, and as a result he owned his own construction business and built many homes in the Newton County area. Additionally, he liked spending time outdoors camping and fishing. Mr. Cook was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather; and was an excellent provider for his family. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Frances Cook; and his parents, Raymond and Dovie (Thaxton) Cook.

 

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Peggy Cook, Gary and Brenda Cook, Frank and Vickie Cook, Marty and Stacey Cook, all of Covington; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

David Alston Johnson

David Alston Johnson, of Conyers, passed away December 20, 2014, at the age of 66.  Mr. Johnson farmed with his father until he enlisted in the US Army in 1966, completing three tours of duty in Vietnam.  He enjoyed fishing, especially saltwater, and deer hunting, and loved his dog, Peanut Butter.  Mr. Johnson worked a total of 40 years as a Grade Foreman and Superintendent for Southern Pavers, Ashland Petroleum and Construction, and Pittman Construction.  He was a member of Apostolic Community Church.  Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, James Bunyon and Sararuth (Sprayberry) Johnson, as well as a brother, Steve Johnson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Gloria J. Keith Studdard

Keith Studdard, of Covington, passed away December 21, 2014, at the age of 58.  He was employed by Rockdale County Sheriffs Office as a deputy sheriff for several years until retiring on disability.  Mr. Studdard was a member of High Point Baptist Church, Covington Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge #6, and held dual membership in the Madison and Loganville Chapters of The Order of the Eastern Star. In addition, he was an avid ham radio operator.  Mr. Studdard was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Francis (Smith) Studdard, and his siblings.

 

Mr. Studdard is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Stanley Studdard; children and spouse, Mallory and Jason Burroughs, Tayler Hinton, Levi Hinton, William Hinton, Libby Stanley, all of Covington; granddaughter, Hailey Burroughs; sister-in-law, Beverly Studdard of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Studdard will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. John Deerman officiating.  The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct their Memorial Service prior to leaving the chapel.  Interment will follow in High Point Baptist Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, December 22, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Covington Masonic Golden Fleece Lodge #6, Masonic Building, Covington, GA  30014.

Obit - James "Jimmy" Vassak, Jr.

James "Jimmy" Robert Vassak, Jr., of Monroe, passed away December 13, 2014, at the age of 53. Jimmy was a kindhearted person, who was always willing to help others, yet expected nothing in return. He enjoyed watching westerns, playing pool and tinkering in his garage. Jimmy loved life, adored his family and cherished the time he spent with his granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Helen Ann (Kalba) Vassak.

           

Survivors include his wife, Gay Vassak; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Joe Bledsoe of Statham; son and daughter-in-law, Blake and Tara Smith of Monroe; granddaughters, Alexis and Eliana Smith; sisters, Theresa Ann Washington of Flomot, TX, Jodi Folchetti of Cumming; brothers, Michael Vassak of Dacula, Kevin Vassak, Raymond Vassak, both of Dahlonega; as well as several nieces and nephews.        

 

Funeral Services for Jimmy will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Chris Conner officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, December 16, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Obit - Nellie Jo Nash

Nellie Jo Nash of Covington, GA, passed away December 11, 2014, at the age of 71.  Mrs. Nash loved her family and was a good wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  In her spare time, she loved listening to music, especially Elvis, going on cruises, camping, crafts, cooking and spending time with her family during the holidays and Christmas. Mrs. Nash loved to laugh and have a good time.  She was preceded in death by her father, Wesley Mayo.

 

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, the love of her life, Jude; daughter, Gidget Gue of Covington; son, Todd Nash of Mooresburg, TN; grandchildren, Jessica Peale of Oxford, GA and Jennifer Gue of Columbus, GA; great-granddaughter, Claire Peale and her mother, Violet Mayo of Huntington, WV; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Charles Stephens of Proctorville, OH, Millie Wigginton of Tampa, FL, Billie Austin of Portsmouth, VA; Aunt Katheryn Earls of Huntington, WV; as well as several nieces and nephews; and her very special friend, Sara Bridewell. 

 

A Graveside Service will be held Monday, December 15, 2014, 1:00 PM, at White Chapel Memorial Garden, in Barboursville, West Virginia. The family will receive friends at Wallace Funeral Home, in Barboursville, Monday, from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Sandra Budd of Covington, passed away December 11, 2014, at the age of 69. Sandra enjoyed cooking for her family, creating porcelain dolls, doing crafts and traveling – especially cruises and deep sea fishing trips. She loved her pets, cherished her family dearly and will be greatly missed by all who knew and adored her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucius William and Ruby Ophelia (Quick) Timbs; and her sister, Debbie Lynn.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 29 years, Beryl Budd of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie Farmer of Conyers, Kenny Farmer of Stockbridge; granddaughters, Brittany Farmer-Hawkins, Tiffany Farmer; great-grandson, Caden Grindle; great-granddaughter, Jayla Farmer; sister, Joyce Proctor; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Obit - Rita Unger

Rita Unger of Covington, passed away December 10, 2014, at the age of 82.  She and her loving husband, Eric, were adventurous German immigrants who migrated to the United States to raise a family.  The family lived for a short time in Ohio and Kentucky before settling in the Covington, Georgia area. She worked at Hercules in Covington for 25 years.  She will be remembered by her family as a very loving mother and grandmother (Oma), who enjoyed traveling the United States and Europe.  She was also an animal lover, who enjoyed her dogs, Teddy, Amber and Suzie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Heindrich and Alvina (Leidenfrost) Neubauer , her brother Edu Neubauer, and her granddaughter Erica Kelley.

 

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Eric, who was the love of her life; daughters and son- in-law, Silvia and Mike Redmond, and Mona Kelley, all of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Henry and Donna Unger of Highlands Ranch, CO; Robert Unger of Oxford; grandchildren, Carlyn, Madalyn, and Samuel Unger, Todd Crumbliss, Paul (and wife, Kristi) Crumbliss, Clint (and wife,Shannon) Aaron, Diana Almond, Daniel and Emily Unger, Erica, Megan and Ashley Kelley; great grandchildren, Reanna Maddox, Destiny Almond, Jason and Christopher Cabe, Zack Crumbliss, Macy Aaron, Savanna Crumbliss, Ansley Crumbliss; sister, Geisla Bode, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Philmore "King Philly" McLean

Philmore G. McLean of Covington, also affectionately known as "King Philly", passed away December 7, 2014, at the age of 67. He cherished his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He LOVED women! He enjoyed working with his hands and was a jack of all trades. He was very intellectual in all subjects and enjoyed light-hearted conversation. King Philly was very charismatic, had a terrific sense of humor, enjoyed singing and was very good at it. He was a cowboy movie fanatic and would sit and watch them for hours. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him! He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent George and Hyacinth (Rugless) McLean; and his sister, Molly.

 

Survivors include his wife, Valrie E. Obit - Danny Carson

Danny Carson of Conyers, passed away December 8, 2014, at the age of 69. Mr. Carson served his country proudly in the United States Air Force and worked for Allied Systems for 30 years. He enjoyed traveling, loved spending time with his family and made an effort to repair relationships previously broken. Mr. Carson was preceded in death by his birth mother, Evelyn Gregory; and his grandparents, William and Maggie Carson.

James G. Walton, age 82, of Snellville, died December 7, 2014. Mr. Walton proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, and retired from the Veterans Administration after 34 years of dedicated service. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Mr. Walton was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

 

Survivors include his wife, Gail Haralson Walton; children, Greg Walton, Debbie Walton Boaz; grandchildren, Nicole Boaz, Josh Boaz; and his sister, Joyce Walton Moore.

Patricia Hawkins

Patricia Hawkins, of Maryville, TN, formerly of Jackson, GA, passed away December 5, 2014, at the age of 72.  Mrs. Hawkins enjoyed working in the church and was a faithful pastor's wife at Lighthouse Apostolic Church in Jackson.  Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, cooking, collecting recipes, and traveling.  In addition, she enjoyed catering wedding receptions.  Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents, Hershell and Mary Frances Thompson; and brother, Norman Thompson.    

 

Survivors include her husband, Rev. Peggy Knox, age 79, of Covington, passed away December 2, 2014. Mrs. Knox was a soft-spoken lady, with a gentle spirit and caring heart. She enjoyed playing bridge and dining out at nice restaurants. Additionally, she was an exceptional cook, and was known for her delicious pancakes and biscuits. Mrs. Knox cherished her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, D.L. Sara Christine Bell of Riverdale, passed away December 1, 2014, at the age of 95. Mrs. Bell was previously a member of First Baptist Church of Riverdale where she taught both Sunday School and Bible School. She was currently a member of Heatherwood Baptist Church. She adored their home, in Riverdale, and loved working in her vegetable and flower gardens. At her leisure, she enjoyed decorating and sewing. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Bell; sisters, Mary Ehney, Jessie Moore; and her brother, David L. Hitchcock.

 

Survivors include her sister, Ann Pace of Rutledge; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Bryan Daniel (Baldy) Stevenson

Bryan Daniel "Baldy" Stevenson, of Covington, passed away November 30, 2014, at the age of 89.  He proudly served his country during WW II, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.  He enjoyed riding on his golf cart with his bloodhound, Elvis, working in his garden and fishing.  Mr. Stevenson loved his children and his grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them.  After working for Bibb Manufacturing for 17 years, he began a 17-year second career at Hercules before retiring.  He and his beloved wife, Gracie, were married for 65 years.  Mr. Stevenson was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey D. and Addie (Freeman) Stevenson; grandson, Wade Stevenson; great-granddaughter, Emily Stevenson; sisters, Irene Ingram, Thelma Williams, Dell Wimberly; and brother, Carl Lee Stevenson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Stevenson of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Eddie Bolling of Phenix City, AL; Wanda and Buddy Tucker of Monticello; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Stevenson and Elaine Owens of Covington, Carl and Vickie Stevenson of Oxford, Timothy Stevenson, James and Vickie Stevenson, all of Covington; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Denia Theurer of Albany, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Lyons

Dorothy Lyons, of Covington, GA, formerly of Bluff City, TN, passed away November 29, 2014, at the age of 76.  Mrs. Lyons loved her family and spending time with them.  In addition she enjoyed working in her garden. Before his death, Mrs. Lyons loved spending as much time as she could with her husband.  She was preceded in death by Earl (Bud) Lyons, her husband of 47 years; daughter, Melissa Sue Lyons; and parents, Millard L. and Beulah (McCrary) Taylor.

Betty Tanner Walton

Betty Tanner Walton, of Newborn, passed away November 28, 2014, at the age of 79.  Born in Tifton, she grew up in Payne City Community in Macon, where she attended Miller High School, an all-girls' school.   After graduating, she married and moved to Newborn, where she still lived.  As a very active member of Newborn United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years, served as UMW Treasurer, sang in the choir, and served on several different church boards.  In addition she was a poll worker for many years.  Mrs. Walton raised two daughters, and enjoyed eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Mrs. Walton was preceded in death by her parents, David and Maggie (McMillan) Tanner, as well as a sister, Wilma Fussell.

 

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Sam B. Walton of Newborn; daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Frank Castallana of Newborn, Ann and Larry Laseter of Atlanta; grandchildren, Courtney and Chris Trost, Lauryn and Casey Wells, Cristina and Joe Franklin, Lindsay and Robby Loew, Phillip Castallana, Sydney Laseter, Levi Laseter, Zachary Laseter; great-grandchildren, Mariah Trost, McLane Franklin, Kennedy Trost, JayLeigh Trost, Stella Franklin, Martha Jean Trost; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Betty Tanner of Dublin, GA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Vollie Almand Hicks, of Covington, passed away November 26, 2014, at the age of 78.  Mr. Hicks loved his family and never met a stranger.  He enjoyed helping with Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, camping and hunting.  Mr. Hicks was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Jaycees, both in Conyers, as well as the Telephone Pioneer Club.

Obit - Otho Lane

Otho Lane of Social Circle, passed away November 26, 2014, at the age of 94. Mr. Lane was a veteran of the United States Navy, proudly defending his country in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Mansfield Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, taught the Joy Sunday School Class and served on the board of Deacons. He was a Gideon, member of Kiwanis and past member and Deacon of Avondale First Baptist Church. While at Avondale, he also taught the junior boys' Sunday School class. Mr. Lane enjoyed spending time outside in his garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Elias and Attie (Wetherbee) Lane.

 

Survivors include his wife, Janet B. Lane; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Rebecca and John Knoll of Rosalia, KS; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney Lane of Newborn, Russell and Lynn Lane of Duluth, Robert and Maximina Lane of Stone Mountain; grandchildren, Kendra Garcia, Kenneth Knoll, Kimberly Moore, Robin Lane; great-grandchildren, Kayden Knoll and Landry Moore.

Maggie Clack

Maggie Clack, of Porterdale, passed away November 22, 2014, at the age of 87.  Mrs. Clack enjoyed cooking, fishing and reading, especially her Bible.  She loved to watch Days of Our Lives and In the Heat of the Night on television.  Mrs. Clack was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Clack; sisters, Dolous, Opal and Elizabeth; as well as four brothers.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jean Cobb; grandchildren, Roy Peurifoy, Dawn Hubbell, Hope Hartley, Elizabeth Dent; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Herbert Emil Hess, 75, of Jersey, formerly of Kedulen, Germany, passed away November 17th, 2014. Mr. Hess was preceded in death by his parents, Albert J. and Lina (Haase) Hess, and brother, Walter A. Hess.

 

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathleen M. Hess of Jersey; step-children, Craig Denomme of Jersey, Ronald Denomme of Jackson, Tina Denomme , Lisa Denomme, both of Monroe, Kristi Klebba of Jersey, and Kim Klebba of Savannah; grandchildren, Chloe Glass, Jeffery Glass, both of Monroe, Brandon Denomme of Savannah, Taylor Klebba of Jersey,  Layna Thompson of Savannah; siblings, Sina O. (Hess) Tangermann,  Edda H. (Hess) Scerba, and  Rudolf Oscar Hess.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Hess will be held Friday, November 21, 2014, 5:00 PM, at the Jersey Community Center, 125 Main Street, in Jersey, GA.

Adam Wilcox Obit

Adam Wilcox of Covington, passed away November 18, 2014, at the age of 36. Adam was an avid fan of Georgia Tech, the Atlanta Braves and the Falcons. He loved his Dodge truck and enjoyed taking road trips, studying history and going to theatrical plays. Adam had a jovial spirit, was always joking with his friends and loved to laugh. He cherished his family dearly, and especially loved spending time with them at the holidays. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fred and Emma Moran; and his paternal grandparents, Stewart and Juanita Wilcox.

 

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Erin Nicole Wilcox, Cyler Avery Wilcox; mother, Barbara Wilcox, all of Covington; father and step-mother, James and Dianne Wilcox of Pekin, IL; sister, Marisa Taylor of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Allison Wilcox of Marietta; niece and nephews, Jordan Wilcox of Marietta, Isaac Smith of Frederic, MI, Gavin Taylor of Covington; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Funeral Services for Adam will be held Sunday, November 23, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with entombment following in Memory Chapel Mausoleum at Lawnwood Memorial Park. Travis Bennett, age 46, of Covington, died November 16, 2014. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and hunting. Additionally, he loved Chevrolet cars, was an avid NASCAR fan and his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. Travis was a devoted father, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Obit - Lois Marion France

Lois Marion France of Covington, passed away November 14, 2014, at the age of 69. Mrs. France worked for the United States Federal Government, in the General Services Administration. Following her retirement, she worked as a computer technician for Middle Ridge Elementary School. She was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, and also served as pianist there, and at other churches where her son served in ministerial positions. She raised her children in a Christian home, and instilled in them the values of love and selflessness. Mrs. France was a devout Christian, a dedicated prayer warrior and an amazing friend to all she knew. She had an infectious laugh, and even during her fight against cancer, she was a living testimony of God's love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford C. France; great-granddaughter, Kaia Jordan; and her parents, James and Blanche (Brown) Criswell.

James "Jimmy" Ogden

Jimmy Ogden of Covington, passed away November 14, 2014, at the age of 58. He enjoyed hunting, spending time at his farm, taking his family out on the boat and watching NASCAR. Jimmy loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. Tyler Seagraves of Covington, passed away November 12, 2014, at the age of 88.  Mr. Seagraves served his country in the United States Navy. He loved his family and enjoyed being outside, going hunting, fishing and working in his garden.  When not traveling for work, he loved spending time with his family. Mr. Seagraves was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Seagraves; parents, Hoyt and Annie Mae Seagraves; and his brother, L.B. Seagraves.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Louise Seagraves of Covington; son, Doug Seagraves of Loganville; granddaughter, Nicole and Justin Rushin of Evans; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Neal of Albany; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Christine Wood

Christine Wood, age 80, of Covington, passed away November 8, 2014. "Nanny", as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was the matriarch of her family. She was one of Jehovah's witnesses, and would often fellowship with both the Covington and Oxford congregations. Mrs. Wood worked for the Newton County school system, in the cafeteria, for 40 years. She was a self-taught seamstress, enjoyed gardening and was an excellent cook. Preceding her in death were her husband, Alex Wood; four great-grandchildren; sister, Mavine Goss; and her brother, William Graham. 

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Marcia Kidd, Kim Wood, Penny and Lee Foster; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Garwood, Joan Schenk; brothers, Edward Graham, Wendell Graham, Ronald Graham; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Wood will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014, 1:00 PM, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, in Covington, with Brother Leotha Roby officiating. A private interment will be held in Lawnwood Memorial Park.

Obit - Bobby E. Herring

Bobby E. Herring of Covington, passed away November 8, 2014, at the age of 78. Mr. Herring served his country in the Army National Guard. He was an active member of Eastridge Community Church, was vital in seeing the church become a reality and very supportive of all the ministries of the church. Additionally, he attended Stewart Community Church. Regardless of the church he attended, Mr. Herring served others his entire life, and was always willing to help anyone in need. As an entrepreneur, he owned several businesses, and started Darnel Quick Recovery, in 1979, and retired in 2004. He enjoyed music and playing both the guitar and piano. Mr. Herring was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his family, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Irene (Sanders) Herring; son, Danny Herring; and his granddaughter, Danielle Herring.

Melissa "Sam" Sweet-Free

Melissa "Sam" Sweet-Free joined her Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 6, 2014, after a year-long battle with peritoneal mesothelioma.  She was born in Atlanta on June 16, 1966.  Sam was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend.  For the last eight years she was employed by Summit Holdings in Gainesville, where she enjoyed her work and office family.  She was in her element when she was helping others through difficult times with words of encouragement, sympathy and prayers.  Her favorite pastime was enjoying the beach or skiing at the lake with her family. 

 

She is survived by father and step-mother, Lynn and Sharon Payne; mother, Marion Dismuke; her loving husband, Mark Free; daughter, Samantha Sweet; son Maxwell Sweet;  sister and brother-in-law; Melanie and Kevin Church.  She is also survived by her grandmother, Frances "Polly" Dismuke, niece, Kristy Church Jones and her family.  In addition she is survived by two loving step-daughters, Danelle and Denyes Free; as well as a large extended family of many special aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael Brett Fisher

Michael Brett Fisher of Covington passed away November 7, 2014, at the age of 32.  Brett grew up in the First Baptist Church of Covington where he was very active in the primary and youth programs.  He was an avid FSU fan and loved traveling with his Uncle Bill.  He will be remembered as a loyal friend and will be greatly missed.

Thomas Gordon King, III, of Covington, passed away November 6, 2014, at the age of 76. Mr. King was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. In recent years, he attended Bethel Christian Church, in Conyers. He loved country music, dancing, baseball and riding horses. He liked visiting new restaurants and especially enjoyed catfish. Obit for John A. Stark

John A. Stark of Covington, passed away October 30, 2014, at the age of 85. Mr. Stark was an active member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where he faithfully taught Sunday school for several years. He was raised, in Lawrenceville, by his parents, Hope and Evelyn Stark. When his high school burned, he attended Emory at Oxford and North Georgia College. Mr. Stark graduated from the United States Naval Academy, in 1951, and served as a carrier pilot for the U.S. Navy. He later retired from the reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. After his active duty service, and once he completed graduate school at Georgia Tech, he married Frances Ginn, from Covington, and together they moved to Clearwater, Florida, where he worked for Honeywell. Several years later, they moved to Atlanta where Mr. Stark began his career at Lockheed. He retired in 1989, and they moved to Covington, in 1995. In addition to his work as an engineer, he was a registered land surveyor. Mr. Stark greatly enjoyed his Tuesday morning breakfast group, which met at Bojangles, as well as the monthly men's lunch group. He enjoyed flying small airplanes and growing blueberries. Mr. Stark cherished his family, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Frances G. Stark; children, Lois S. and Felix Peña of Fairfax, VA, Elizabeth S. and Donald Dorsey of Dayton, OH, Stephen J. and Naomi Stark of Signal Mountain, TN; grandchildren, Melita Peña, Carla Peña, Cameron Dorsey, John Dorsey, Danielle Dorsey, Rachel Dorsey, J.D. Stark, Marjorie Stark, Katherine Stark, Jacob Stark; brother and sister-in-law, Judge Homer M. and Mary Louise Stark of Good Hope; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Stark will be held Monday, November 3, 2014, 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church of Covington, with Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow, at 1:30 PM, at Shadowlawn Cemetery, 87 Scenic Highway, in Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, Sunday, November 2, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1139 Usher Street NE, Covington, GA 30014; or a charity of one's choice.
