Obit - Norma Clausen Holcombe

Norma Clausen Holcombe passed to her Heavenly reward on November 27, 2013 at her home in Conyers. Mrs. Holcombe was articulate with figures and worked in the accounting field for over 50 years, having last been employed by Frazee-Thomas & Tate.  Mrs. Holcombe moved to Georgia in 2000 after the passing of her husband.  She was a loyal member of Galloway Methodist Church for 60 years, where she served as Chairman of the Board as well as Treasurer, and was very sad when it closed.  Her love for decorating was evident in the beauty of the Worship Center.  Mrs. Holcombe was preceded in death by her husband, William Hull Holcombe; parents, Charles Alfred/Martin and Josephine (White) Clausen; and sister, Loretta Roberts King

 

Mrs. Holcombe is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and John Bateman of Conyers; grandchildren, John (Bo) Bateman also of Conyers, Bryce and Julie Bateman of Statham; great-granddaughter, Aubry Bateman.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Holcombe will be held at a later date.

Obit - Eula Virginia Watkins

Eula Virginia Watkins of Covington, passed away November 26, 2013, at the age of 91. Mrs. Watkins was of the Baptist faith. She was a talented artist, loved painting, and enjoyed working in her garden. She was a faithful Christian with a kind heart and gentle spirit, who never spoke a negative word about anything. Mrs. Watkins loved her family dearly, and was a dedicated wife and mother for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry T. Watkins; daughters, Sheryl Larry, Joyce G. Sanford; grandson, Jeffrey A. Sanford; and her parents, George C. and Mary L. (Walker) Darby.

 

Survivors include her sister, Blondine Bennett of Conyers; grandchildren, Sandra and David Worthey of Covington, Perry and Sheila Sanford, Tammy and Gene Stanton, all of Madison; great-grandchildren, Leah and Jarad Robinson of Oxford, Chris and Ashley Worthey of Between, GA, Bobby and Laurie Sanford of French Gulch, CA, Tiffany and Brannon Oakes of Eatonton, Brandi and Richard Thompson of Madison, Stacy and Kevin Kelley of Stockbridge; great-great-grandchildren, Malakai Oakes, Dylan Robinson, Noah Oakes, Mason Worthey, Easton Worthey, Oaklyn Thompson; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Alan Frederick Loetzerich

Alan Frederick Loetzerich of Lake Spivey, GA, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Piedmont Henry Hospital with his family by his side. He was born in Evansville, IN, to Oliver and Ruth Tracer Loetzerich. He graduated from Memorial High School, in Evansville, IN. He earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from University of Missouri, St. Louis. He served in the Air Force for 5 years. He worked with the airlines and as a travel agent for over 35 years. He was a member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Morrow, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Nora Miller; cousins, Jane Miller Lawson, Sharon Loetzerich, all of Evansville, IN; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Beulah Carpenter; sister-in-law, Irene Carpenter, all of Berea, KY.

 

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lois Loetzerich of Lake Spivey, GA; daughter, Jennifer Loetzerich of Covington, GA; sister-in-law, Ilene Carpenter of Berea, KY; and his beloved cat, Jackson.

 

A Memorial Service will be held in Richmond, KY, followed by burial in the Richmond Cemetery in Richmond, KY.

Obit - Lucile Lloyd

Lucile H. Lloyd of Oxford, passed away November 25, 2013, at the age of 87. Mrs. Lloyd worked as a weld inspector for Lockheed, and was the perfect example of Rosie the Riveter, a cultural icon representing the American working woman, during World War II. She enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, and traveling to the beach and the mountains. Mrs. Lloyd loved her family dearly, and enjoyed going home and spending time with her Metasville family, as well. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin B. Lloyd; and her parents, George T. Sr., and Florence (Motes) Hall.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah L. and Allen K. Nielsen of Oxford; son, Steven A. Lloyd of Eatonton; grandson, John Lloyd of Maysville; sister, Frances H. Lloyd of Jackson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Mary K. Hall, George T. and Betty Hall, Lewis and Inez Hall, all of Metasville, GA; several nieces and nephews.

Shane was a 1997 graduate of Rockdale County High School, and lettered in both baseball and football during his high school career. Margaret Anderson, 64, of Covington, passed away November 25, 2013, at home, following her long battle with cancer. Ms. Anderson owned and operated numerous beauty salons in Covington. She had a passion for helping others, and often volunteered to assist anyone in need. Ms. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie T. and Ella (McCord) Osborn; and her brothers, Roy Osborn, Robert Osborn, Clark Osborn and Junior Osborn.

Julio P. Santana

Julio P. Santana of Covington passed away November 23, 2013 at Newton Medical Center.  He was 66 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Santana was employed by New York University, in New York City, as a Maintenance Supervisor for 12 years.  Prior to his employment at NYU, he was employed for 10 years by Sound Design in New Jersey.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and Vietnam. Mr. Santana was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Covington.  He was an avid baseball fan, especially the New York Mets; and was a fan of the New York Giants and the New York Jets.  Mr. Santana was preceded in death by his parents, Julio Santana and Petronila (Valentin) Soto.

 

Survivors include his wife, Carmen Maria Santana of Covington; daughters, Adelvi Santana of Yonkers, NY, Carolyn Callwood of Conyers; son, Julio Peter Santana of Yonkers, NY; grandchildren, Diamond Callwood, Stephanie Cruz, Albert Callwood, Tristen Callwood; sister, Josephine Velez of Guayama, Puerto Rico; brothers, Esteban Santana of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Florencio Santana of Guayama, Puerto Rico; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Earl Goddard

Earl Elsworth Goddard of Decatur, passed away November 19, 2013, at the age of 91. He was a veteran of the United States Army, and proudly served his country as a paratrooper during World War II. Mr. Goddard was of the Southern Baptist faith, and cherished his time reading his Bible. He enjoyed meeting new people and talking about horses. Mr. Goddard was a strong, independent man who loved life, his family, especially his wife, Mary, and his daughters.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sheldon and Rua Mae (Hull) Goddard, his sister Opal, and his wife Mary.


Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Daniel Dunkel of Walnut Creek, CA, Jan and Ronald Miller of Roseville, CA, Valerie Kelly and Norman Teinowitz of Stevenson, WA, Jeannie and Mike Kaplan of Oxford; grandchildren, Andrew Miller, Kelly McSherry, Andrea Bell; and two great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Martin, 74, of Covington, passed away November 24, 2013. He was a devoted member of East Newton Baptist Church. Mr. Martin loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he spent with them all.

Obit - Rochelee "Judy" Richardson

Rochelee "Judy" Richardson went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 23, 2013, surrounded by her family and friends.  She was born May 25, 1940 in Toccoa, Georgia.  She graduated from Toccoa Falls Institute in 1958. Judy was a proud mother and grandmother and doted on her two sons and grandsons. She was a humble and kind person with a giving spirit. She attended Trinity Praise Center, in Mansfield, where she enjoyed making cookies for the youth.   She loved her friends and enjoyed sharing her delicious baked goods with them all.  She enjoyed planting flowers and watching them grow.  She also enjoyed playing bingo with her friends at Kroger.  Judy was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.  She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Richardson; parents, Hugh and Ruby Simpson; brother, Harrison Simpson.

Obit - Raburn Lee Crawford

Raburn Lee Crawford of Covington, passed away November 21, 2013, at the age of 80.  He was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church and was a dedicated employee of Bonded Service Warehouse for 47 years.  He was thankful for all of his blessings, his home and especially his family who he loved dearly. He enjoyed shopping at yard sales and pawn shops.  Mr. Crawford loved gardening, giving vegetables away, and riding his grandchildren on his farm equipment.

Joseph Frank Lawson Jr., 82, and his wife, Margaret Elizabeth (Seidel) Lawson, 86, died at their home in Shady Dale, November 19, 2013. They were married 66 years and together instilled in their children the values of hard work, honesty and faith in the true God Jehovah. Mrs. Lawson was a devoted wife and mother and an ideal sister to Eugene M. Seidel of Portland, OR.

 

Survivors include their children, David Frank Lawson of Mansfield, Deborah Lawson Kersey of Oxford, Timothy Richard Lawson of Newnan, Joe Frank Lawson III, of Shady Dale; grandchildren, Raymond Loran Kersey III, Raylene Elizabeth Kersey, Rathan Lee Kersey, Makisha Lawson Gann, Timothy Joshua Lawson, Richard Noah Lawson, Hunter Avery Lawson, Matthew Frank Lawson, Christopher Qualls, Joshua Qualls, Candice Qualls, Carolyn Paulous; great-granddaughter, Taylor Gann.

Obit - Ronald Dimery

Ronald Lee Dimery, of Oxford, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at the age of 78.  He met and married the love of his life, Dottie, at Florida State University, and they were married 58 ½ years.  Mr. Dimery was an accomplished residential and commercial architect winning multiple awards for historic preservation.  He dearly loved his family and his country. A Boy Scout troop leader, he enjoyed being outdoors and was an adventurer extraordinaire.  Mr. Dimery was an Oxford City Council member for many terms, a volunteer firefighter, MYF leader, and was very active in CSI and AIA.  His hobbies were traveling to the beach and Kauai, camping, boating and gentleman farming.  He was an avid Florida State fan and loved old cars.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Inez Dimery.

 

Survivors include his beloved wife, Dottie Dimery of Oxford; daughter and son-in-law, Letha and Lex Betty of Ocala, FL; son; Stuart Dimery of Oxford; grandchildren, Sam, Josh, and Zach Betty, Matthew and David Dimery; 5 great-grandchildren; and many beloved friends and family. 

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Dimery will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, November, 23, 2013 at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Evans Floyd

Harold Evans Floyd passed away November 18, 2013 at his home in Covington.  He was 81 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Floyd served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He enjoyed traveling and listening to gospel music.  Mr. Floyd was a member of Voice of Pentecost.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jessie Marion (Payne) Floyd, and son, Eddie Floyd.

 

Survivors include his son, Billy Floyd of Covington; grandchildren, Shane and Angela Floyd, Bonnie Allen, great-grandchildren, Travis Floyd, Chris Floyd, Bodhi Allen, Michael Elias Warden, Lyric Warden, Courtney Fiddie, Jessie Floyd; sister, Mary Sue Phillips of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jenny Floyd of Austell.

Yvonne (Voni) Bates Crowe

Yvonne (Voni) Bates Crowe passed away November 18, 2013 at Rockdale Medical Center.  She was 52 years of age at the time of her death.  Voni graduated in 1979 from Newton County High School. While attending high school, she worked as a Candy Striper.  In April 1983 she graduated from Gordon College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. After graduating from nursing school, she worked at Newton Medical Center and Rockdale Medical for several years before joining East Atlanta Gastroenterology.  Voni loved fishing and antique cars, especially the older Chevrolet Camero, and was a comedian, performing at the Punchline.  Voni loved being a mother, reading and going to the movies with McKenzie. 

 

Survivors include her daughter, McKenzie Farrow Crowe; McKenzie's father and former husband, Matt Crowe; parents, James and Kathryn Bates, all of Oxford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jana Bates and Ted Phillips of Dacula; Beth Bates and Rick Goddard of Blairsville; Charlotte Gibson Hull of St. Simons; nieces and nephew, Lacey Goddard, Camden Goddard, Rachel Phillips; great niece, Aubree Goddard Miller.

Lee Ann Brown, of Covington, passed away November 15, 2013, at the age of 52.  She was at home surrounded by her loving family after fighting a long illness.

Tim Capes of Oxford, passed away November 12, 2013, at the age of 70. Tim worked for the U.S. Postal Service, for 40 years, and made many friends during his career. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and going to estate sales and classic car shows. Tim had a giving heart, and loved his family and spending time with them. Mary A. Burch of Covington, passed away November 11, 2013, at the age of 92. Mrs. Burch was a choir member and longtime Sunday School teacher at both Porterdale and Oxford Baptist churches. She was a very Godly woman that loved the Lord, and was involved in the homebound ministry visiting the shut-in's. Mrs. Burch enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, reading, and working crossword puzzles. She loved her family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Herbert Burch; parents, Benson and Ruby (Piper) Adams; sister, Roberta "Bobbie" Ridling; and her brothers, Richard Adams, Carroll Adams, John Adams, Bill Adams and Edgar Adams.

Nadine White Long of Porterdale passed away November 11, 2013 at Covington Manor Nursing Home.  She was 82 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Long enjoyed sewing and reading.  She was a member of Central Community Church in Covington and will be remembered as a devoted wife, aunt, and friend to many.  Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her parents Rupert Eugene and Ammerett (Butler) White.

 

Mrs. Long is survived by her husband of 56 years, Donald H. Long of Covington; devoted family members, Jane Allen, Terrie Dickerson, Paul Autry, Robbie Autry, Debbie Roberson; as well as other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Obit - Mary Bowie Whittaker

Mary Bowie Whittaker, of Covington, passed away on November 8, 2013.  She was born February 5, 1932 in Manchester, Georgia, to Roy E. and Odessa Davis Bowie.  She graduated from Porterdale High School Class of 1949, and was also a graduate of Crawford W. Long School of Nursing.  Mrs. Whittaker worked as a surgical nurse at Georgia Baptist Hospital and for Dr. Charles Dowman for many years.  She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Joe Whittaker; brother, James Richard Bowie.

 

Survivors include her sister, Annese B. Mathews; niece, Annese Furis, her husband, Jim, and their sons, Alex and Zane; nephews, Chris Bowie, his wife, Barrie, and their children, Haden, Nathan and Caitlin; Brent Bowie; Richard Bowie, his wife Holly, and their daughters, Madison and Margaux; many cousins and dear friends.

 

A Graveside service will be held Saturday, November 16, 2013, 2:00 PM at Lawnwood Memoral Park with a reception following at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.  In accordance with her wishes, the family requests no flowers.

Martha K. Hewell, of Social Circle, passed away on November 8, 2013, at the age of 84.  She was a member of County Line Baptist Church where she served as leader of the nursery department for many years.  She loved to bowl and watch old game shows, but most of all she loved to watch her grandchildren play baseball and softball.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hewell; grandson, Jake Hewell; granddaughter, Amanda Davenport.

Obit - Evelyn Corinthia Daniel

Evelyn Corinthia Daniel of Monticello, passed away November 8, 2013, at the age of 77. She enjoyed reading, traveling to the beach, meeting new people and going to the casino. She loved her family, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Daniel; her mother, Katherine Alliston; and her father, Otis Tinch.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Angelia Jones of Eatonton; son, Rusty Daniel of Monticello; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - C.F. Henderson

C.F. Henderson, of Covington, passed away on November 7, 2013, at the age of 91.  Mr. Henderson was employed by Firestone Tires in Covington for 17 years, and operated Henderson's Phillips 66 Station for many years.  After selling his gas station, he worked in construction with C.H. Berry.  He was a member of Grace Baptist Church where his son, Rev. Harold Ray Henderson served as pastor.  Prior to his membership at Grace, he was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Mr. Henderson enjoyed blue grass music and played with several country and blue grass bands including the Pine Valley Boys.  He also loved horses.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Woodie Faye (Garner) Henderson; children, Rev. Harold Ray Henderson, Peggy Henderson, Wayne Henderson, Tommy Henderson; parents, William and Mattie Mae (Hale) Henderson; sister, Maggie Mae Hails.

Betty Jean "BJ" Mathis, 58, of Covington, passed away November 5, 2013. Betty Jean worked for Waffle House for more than 22 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Barney Joel Draper; and her sister, Earline Faulkner.

John F. Hogan of Social Circle, passed away November 4, 2013, at the age of 86. Mr. Hogan was a lifelong resident of Walton County, and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, in Social Circle. In addition, he was a member of Dawson Masonic Lodge # 68, also in Social Circle. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture after 11 years of employment, and from Covington Furniture Company after 4 years of dedicated service. Mr. Hogan was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and friend, and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Foster and Drue Willie Everett Hogan; and his sons and daughter-in-law, Tony Hogan, Mike and Gail Hogan.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Helen (Sullivan) Hogan; sister, Hazel Hogan of Mt. Dora, FL; sister-in-law, Joyce Knight of Social Circle; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Barbara Samples

Barbara Miller Samples, 78, of Covington, passed away October 31, 2013. She was a former member of Lakewood Heights Baptist Church, in Atlanta. In 1972, Mrs. Samples moved her membership to the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where she taught Sunday School and attended the Lamp Bearers Sunday School Class. Her family was her priority, and while her children were young she volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother. In addition, she was involved with several civic groups and charitable organizations, including the DeKalb Junior Woman's Club, where she was awarded the Irene J. Watts Award in 1969. Mrs. Samples worked in many occupations including Georgia Highway Express, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, Rich's Department Store, and the Medical Arts Pharmacy. She had a lifelong love for horses, and showed Arabian horses over the southeastern United States for more than 30 years. She enjoyed roller skating and traveling with her husband and the Georgia Senior Golfers Association. Mrs. Samples was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth (Kesler) Miller; and her brothers, Ralph Miller and Cecil Miller.

 

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Robert E. (Bob) Samples; daughter, Brenda Gail Jones of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Karen Samples of Suwanee; grandchildren, Robert Coleman Jones, Melissa Kessler Jones, Trevor Colin Samples, Chloe Brittain Samples; sisters, Betty Davis of Hoschton, GA, Runnell Lykins of Peoria, IL; several nieces and nephews.
